Trimming a candle wick between 1/8" - 1/4" before each burn helps increase the performance of your candle, prolongs the candle life, and most importantly helps promote a safer burn.
If wicks are not trimmed, the flame can become bigger, the candle can burn hotter, and more soot can be produced. In order to get the best and safest candle performance, trim your wicks before each burn (with these awesome wick trimmers)! Or at the very least, be sure to pinch off the excess burned wick with your fingernails or nail clippers down to 1/8" - 1/4".
